Joint MendelU and BGU Urban Sustainability Week in Brno, Czech Republic Dates: 9 to 12 February 2026
Mendel University in Brno and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev invite motivated M.Sc and Ph.D. students to CitySense, a week-long workshop on environmental sensing and urban sustainability. You bring curiosity and a laptop. We bring curated datasets, mentors, and coffee.
This is a data-driven workshop. All projects will rely on existing datasets from satellites, ground-based air quality and meteorological networks, traffic cameras, and other urban data feeds. The emphasis is on practical data analysis tools and reproducible workflows that turn city data into publishable insights.
The workshop aims to produce meaningful, data-driven research on urban sustainability while equipping participants with advanced tools and practical knowledge.
Who should apply
Graduate and postdoc students in engineering, earth and environmental sciences, geoinformatics, urban planning sciences, remote sensing, computer science, or related fields who can demonstrate hands-on data analysis skills and a clear interest in urban sustainability.
Required application documents
Please submit a single PDF that includes your CV and a one-page statement outlining a feasible research idea for the workshop, along with a brief description of your relevant experience. Highlight the tools you actually use, for example, Python, R, SQL, QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth Engine, Git, time series analysis, geospatial joins, sensor data quality control, and basic machine learning.
What to expect
Short, targeted lectures on climate, urban sensing, and applicable data science methods; long, protected work blocks with mentor support; a friendly competition with prizes for the strongest analyses; social activities, and a final showcase of results.
How to apply
Send your single PDF to michaela.mensikova@mendelu.cz, with the subject line “Application CitySense”. Application deadline: January 20th, 2026. Notification of results: January 23rd 2026.
