State doctoral exam
A student may apply for the State doctoral exam after fulfilling the requirements of the relevant doctoral study programme and revising the dissertation thesis in accordance with the feedback provided during Board exam 1 and 2.
The State doctoral exam precedes the defence of the dissertation and is usually held on the same date as the defence.
The examination consists of a presentation of the dissertation (either in progress or final version) and a scientific discussion focused on the courses of the State doctoral exam. The discussion addresses broader contexts related to the topic of the dissertation.
If the State doctoral exam is not held on the same date as the dissertation defence, the student must submit the current version of the revised dissertation in electronic form together with the application. The thesis must reflect the comments provided during Board exam 1 and 2.
The grading scale of “pass” and “fail” is used in the evaluation of the State doctoral exam. A simple majority vote of all members of the examination board is required to pass the State doctoral exam. In the case of a failing grade, the State doctoral exam may be repeated in one revision period.
